I have this thing where I’m very hesistant to post images less than 500 pixels wide or, if the image’s ratio makes is less than 500 pixels wide post-resize - this is because Tumblr’s resizing algorithm wants to make everything 500 pixels by 700 pixels with 700 getting preference. I’ll either respectfully resize the image locally before uploading (adding a border at a 5:7 ratio or cropping it if its a scanned image with the edges showing), search for another version of the image, post a link to its page or skip it.
But yeah, pro-tip: if an image is 700 by 1000, it will be resized to 400 by 700. If an image is 550 by 650, it will be resized to 500 by 550. And so on. Tumblr likes 700 when the image is in a vertical orientation. The Image Zoom add-on for Firefox is a useful tool for finding out if an image will end up narrower than 500 pixels. You can enter “500” for the width and the height will be calculated automatically. If the number is larger than 700, the image will be made narrow.
OCD in the house.
The OCD comment made me laugh. Thanks for the tip.
